You have a standard upright vacuum or maybe a canister and you’ve noticed what a pain it is to vacuum the stairs. If you’re like me, maybe the stairs don’t get vacuumed every time you vacuum. No. I’m sure you’re more diligent than I am…it wouldn’t be hard. Just in case you’re in the same boat as me, then what you need is the best vacuum for stairs.
I tried uprights. I tried canisters and they weren’t much better. The problem is twofold. Their hoses (if they even have one) are too short to reach the entire stairway easily and they don’t come with cleaning heads that give you the same cleaning power as an upright beater bar or a canister with a beater head. If you work hard enough with the small head, you can probably get the job done, but I end up sweating like I just worked out in the attic in July. If you have pet hair, forget it. If the cord is too short, that may be a third problem although I haven’t experienced that one. Which is the best vacuum for stairs?

We really like the Black & Decker BDH2000FL 20-Volt Max Lithium Ion Flex Vac because it’s so compact, cordless, and powerful. It doesn’t come with a beater brush, but it has a reasonably long built-in hose that makes it easy to reach most cleaning tasks. It comes with a pet hair brush for those stairs frequented by your pride and joy and 3-stage filtration should keep pet dander out of the air. #8 – Metro Vacuum VM4BS500T MetroProfessionals 120-Volt Stainless Steel Look Hand Vacuum with Turbine Brush and Accessories
The Metro Vacuum VM4BS500T MetroProfessionals 120-Volt Stainless Steel Look Hand Vacuum is one serious looking vacuum cleaner in a light 2.7 lb. package. Like most Metro Vacuum models, it’s designed to hold up to just about anything life throws at it with its all-steel construction. It’s not cordless and so it has a 4.5 amp, 500 watt motor that generates amazingly power suction even to the point of rivaling some full-sized machines. Like the Orecks it favors bags over dust cups and it comes with plenty of attachments and a comforting 5 year motor warranty.
No vacuum list would be complete without adding a Dyson to the mix. They are the standard by which most users, for better or worse, judge all vacuums. There is no doubt that the Dyson V6 Trigger is a very powerful vacuum cleaner and it uses state-of-the-art battery technology that supports that power and charges quickly. It gives fade-free power like lithium-ion using a different fast-charging chemical makeup. As if the suction wasn’t powerful enough, Dyson put a Boost button on the vacuum to give it even more suction power when you need it most. One of Dyson’s most notable features is its fast spinning motor that spins at up to three times conventional motors and its arrangement of 15 cyclones to increase airflow and centrifugal forces capturing more fine dust than other vacuums. It comes with a bevy of tools, but be warned. It is a very expensive vacuum and we’re not sure you’re going to see the value of this vacuum for the stairs.

The Eureka EasyClean Corded Hand-Held Vacuum, 71B is one of our personal favorites in the list. The main reason is that it comes with a power beater head that does a better job on stairway carpet than most vacuums. Particularly if your concerned about pet hair, the 71B can bring up hair which we all know doesn’t come up with just suction. It’s corded, but that give it more power as long as you need it and the long 20-foot power cord will keep you vacuuming from one outlet the entire time. You get even more reach from the deluxe hose which extends 3 times its length to reach farther. It actually has two motors. One 5.5 amp motor provides the deep suction power and the other rotates the brush. You can run the vacuum with or without the brush turning which makes it great for all surfaces. One key feature for stairs is the Riser Visor which flips up to allow you to clean upholstery and stairs either vertically or horizontally. It’s not the lightest at 5 lbs. but for stairs it should be plenty light enough. This is certainly one of the best vacuum cleaners for stairs.
Eureka EasyClean Handheld Vacuum Review
We put the Dirt Devil Classic 7 Amp Bagless Handheld Vacuum, M0100 in our list because it gets good ratings and it’s so popular. Its 7 amp motor really brings the suction power and is almost twice the power of the previous model. This model also has a motorized brush that is perfect for stairs and pet hair. You also get a 5-piece tool kit that extends its cleaning power to just about anywhere around the house and garage.
Shark has made a big name for itself in the vacuum world with smart and convenient designs that appeal to home users. The Shark Rocket Corded Hand Vac (HV292) is a great example. It doesn’t have the longest cord at 15 feet, but it comes with a TruePet motorized hand tool that makes cleaning stairs even with pet hair, very effective. They claim that this is the most powerful handheld that Never Loses Suction or Power and there is no doubt it’s powerful. It’s ultra-lightweight, never loses suction, and comes with some great tools.

You might ask why would the Hoover Platinum Collection LiNX Cordless Pet Handheld Vacuum, BH50030 show up as one of the top rated models. It just does everything right. First of all you know if it’s designed for pet hair, then everything else it vacuums will be easier. Of course you get the fade-free lithium power and long battery life, but what really sets it apart is its ejectable brush roll and 25 degree pivot head design that make cleaning and cleanup very easy. It’s not 20V, but it is 18V which is not top of the line, but still very powerful for a cordless.
Hoover Platinum LiNX Pet Cordless Handheld Vacuum Review
The Eureka RapidClean Step Handheld Corded Vacuum, 41A is another favorite of ours. Much like Eureka’s EasyClean, it features both a powered brush roll and a handy hose and wand that makes it great for cleaning all aspects of stairs. This is a corded model, but it gives you a full 28-foot reach between its’ long 25-foot power cord and 3-foot stretch hose. You should be able to reach most stairs from one outlet. It’s powerful with a full 6 amp motor and also comes with easy-roll wheels built-in and a brush roll that turns on and off for hard surface cleaning. The RapidClean, much like the EasyClean is designed by Eureka especially for the special cleaning needs of your stairs. It also may be the best vacuum for pet hair.
