Most every household needs a vacuum cleaner, but which one is the best vacuum cleaner for you? There are so many types; upright, canister, bagged, bagless, stick vacuum, no-loss-of-suction, cordless, corded, wet/dry, leaf, and the list goes on.
Let’s take a look at some of the vacuum types.
Upright or Canister
Why would you buy one over the other? Here are some pros and cons for you to consider.
- Easier to store
- Can be self-propelled
- No bending over to empty or switch on/off
- Can be more difficult to use in tight spaces
- Heavier to carry up and down stairs
- Easier to use under low furniture and in tight spaces
- Canister is usually more compact and lightweight
- Vacuum head is lighter
- Units can be bulky to move around
- Canister tows behind you instead of being in front of you
- Canister can damage furniture
- Comparable canisters usually cost more
You could argue that the right upright will have all the features you need and the same for the right canister. All things being equal, it comes down to a matter of preference for pushing a vacuum in front of you or pulling a vacuum from behind.
Bagged or Bagless
If you listen to the proponents of bagless vacuums, they will say that a bagless unit saves money on bags, is easier to empty, and makes less mess.
Bagged vacuum lovers will point out that bags don’t cost that much money, the vacuum stays cleaner as all the dirt goes in the bag, and the bags are actually easier because you throw them away. They will also point out that bagless vacuums have filters that must be cleaned and sometimes replaced.
If you just like the concept of no bags then go with bagless, but some of the finest vacuums in the world are bagged and plan to stay that way. That says something about bagless to me.
What about stick vacuums? Stick vacuums are designed to allow you to quickly clean up messes without having to drag out your main vacuum. They can usually be stored in a pantry or closet near where you get the most messes, are lightweight, and many are cordless. They are typically not replacements for your main vacuum, so if you decide on a stick vacuum, it will be in addition to your primary vacuum.
Okay, you’ve decided on a vacuum type. How do you pick the best vacuum cleaner of that type? It is often the case that best selling products are ones that buyers have researched and found to have the right features for the money; are a good value. You can take advantage of their knowledge by choosing or researching popular products. We have done a lot of the research for you and put it into a single list to make it easier for you to choose. Take a look and see if one of these vacuums is the perfect model for you!
