Lawn Vacuum: Hurricane Force Top Rated Corded Blower Vacuum Shredder

Cordless lawn vacuums are all the rage because of their convenience, but if you want to get the job done better and faster, a corded electric lawn vacuum or gas leaf blower will give you the power.  It’s true that with a corded lawn vacuum you have to deal with the cord, but corded models are usually lighter without the extra weight of the battery and the gain in power and performance you get from an AC motor will more than make up for the inconvenience.

A lawn vacuum is a great tool, particularly in the Fall, when the leaves can take over.  A leaf blower can save you from extra hours of sweeping and raking by providing a powerful stream of air that is in many cases more powerful than the most powerful Category 4 hurricane.

Power

For a blower lawn vacuum, it’s all about the power.  That’s why corded and gas blower vacuums are so much more effective than cordless models.  They simply have more power.

A powerful motor translates in to higher airflow for sweeping, and more powerful suction for vacuuming.

The power and effectiveness of a corded blower vacuum can be measured in different ways including Amps, miles-per-hour (MPH) of the airflow, and cubic-feet-per-minute (CFM).  The higher the amperage of the motor, speed of the airflow in MPH, and volume of air in CFM, the more powerful and effective the lawn vacuum will be.

Lawn Vacuum Toro 51621 UltraPlus Leaf Blower Vacuum Sweeping ViewImpeller

The impeller is the workhorse part of a lawn vacuum.  It creates the powerful suction vacuuming power and the high-speed stream of air for sweeping.  Since all the debris that passes through the vacuum has to pass through the impeller, it also takes a real beating.

Many models have plastic impellers that can produce adequate suction and fast airflow, but they fall short in durability and endurance.  Leaves and lighter debris are no problem, but small sticks can damage the impeller over time.

The best vacuum blowers have metal impellers that both generate powerful suction and airflow and are durable for long life.

Also, some models use the metal impeller to shred material entering the vacuum to reduce its size and the volume for more efficient bagging.

Impeller size is also important.  The larger the impeller, the more air and debris can flow through and the more effective the leaf shredder or leaf mulcher will be.

Variable Speed Control

When you’re trying to sweep around obstacles like cars in the driveway, you often would like to reduce the airflow so that it doesn’t cover them with debris or send high speed projectiles toward them.  Variable speed control allows you to tailor the airspeed to the task at hand and get closer to obstacles without risk of damage.

There are two types of variable speed control.  Most speed controls provide two or more speeds that you can set with a variable speed control knob on the lawn vacuum blower.  The speed control typically only affects the sweeping airspeed.  Some models have the premium capability of infinitely variable speed control that functions for both sweeping and vacuuming.  Infinitely variable speed control allows you to set the precise airspeed you need for every task.

Lawn Vacuum Toro 51621 UltraPlus Leaf Blower Vacuum Storage ViewReduction Ratio

Reduction ratio measures the number of bags of debris can be reduced by the impeller to a single bag of debris.  Some models measure mulching effectiveness by publishing the percentage of debris that can be reduced to a specific size.  In either case, if your goal is to mulch as much of the material as possible while you vacuum, you should pay attention to reduction ratio and mulching effectiveness.

Vacuum Bag

Most blower vacuums come with a bag to capture debris that is vacuumed up.  The bag is a very important part of the vacuum as it needs to be as porous as possible to allow air to flow through it yet not allow material to escape.

Probably the biggest complaint about lawn vacuum bags is emptying them.  Many models make you remove the bag for emptying and depending on how the bag is attached to the vacuum, that can be a real pain.  Some models feature a bottom-emptying bag with the zipper on the bottom.  These bags are easier to empty without removing the bag from the vacuum by just unzipping the bottom and letting the debris fall out.

An additional feature of some vacuums is the ability to store the vacuum inside the vacuum bag.  Just put the vacuum, tubes, and tools right in the bag and hang it in a convenient wall location.

No-Tool Conversion

Most lawn vacuums require you to switch the tube from the sweeper tube to a vacuum tube in order to use them as a yard vacuum.  This switch can be convenient or difficult.  A lot depends on whether you need to use a tool in order to detach and reattach tubes.  In reality, you probably won’t find yourself switching back and forth between tubes frequently, but a convenient mechanism, that doesn’t require tools, makes the process easier and faster.

A unique feature of some models, an oscillating nozzle automatically sweep air back and forth delivering a wider sweeping path without wrist movement.  For long sweeping tasks, it can reduce fatigue and risk of wrist injury significantly.

Tools

If you’re ever dried to sweep wet leaves with an electric leaf blower, you know how difficult it can be to separate the leaves from a hard surface.  You could wait until they dry out, but some blowers come with an additional blower tube or insert that increases the force of the air stream to power away even the most stubborn debris.

Corners and crevices present a special challenge to yard vacuums because even though they produce high-speed airflow, it’s spread across an area that may not remove debris effectively in tight spots.  For those areas, some models have a concentrator nozzle that focuses the airflow on in a narrower stream that can more effectively tackle corners and crevices.

Cord Storage

Few corded models allow you to store the cord on the leaf blower vacuum and that means that you have to find a way to handle the cord.  Some models do have a hook or other method of wrapping the cord around the vacuum so that it is neatly tucked away during storage.

Cord Lock

I believe almost all corded yard vacuums have cord locks now, but it’s good to make sure.  A cord lock lets you lock the power cord onto the lawn vacuum so that it isn’t constantly becoming detached.  In my opinion, it’s probably one of the smartest inventions in outdoor power tools that was ever created.
