Until recently, if you wanted a powerful vacuum cleaner, you needed to buy either an upright or canister corded model. All that has changed with the release of some very powerful cordless vacuum cleaners. A powerful cordless vacuum cleaner offers you the advantage of cleaning continuously without switching outlets, eliminating dragging a long power cord all over your house, and compact lightweight construction that’s easy to move from room to room or level to level in your home.
I think most of us dread getting out our corded canister or upright vacuum cleaner just to clean up a small mess. With a powerful cordless vacuum cleaner, you don’t have to dread it anymore making it more likely that you will vacuum more often resulting in a cleaner home.
So what should you look for in a cordless vacuum cleaner?
Cordless vacuum cleaner power can be measured by their lithium-ion battery’s voltage. The newest cordless vacuums have more than 20 volts of power and some have up to 25 volts.
A cordless vacuum cleaner’s cleaning ability is not just measured by its battery voltage, but in general a cordless vacuum cleaner with a more powerful lithium-ion battery will have more cleaning power.
Air watts measures suction power at the suction inlet instead of from the motor and is one of the best measures of a vacuum cleaner’s power. Unfortunately, it’s not always published.
Nowadays, all popular cordless vacs have lithium-ion batteries because of their greater fade-free power, lighter weight, faster charging speed, and longer endurance.
A capable cordless vacuum cleaner should provide at least 30 minutes of continuous cleaning power before it needs to be recharged. That means that most won’t easily replace a corded vacuum for whole house cleaning, but are perfect for touch-up vacuuming or quick cleanup of messes.

If you plan to use your cordless vacuum cleaner for whole house cleaning, you may need to recharge. In that case, the charging time will be important to you.
One of the advantages of a cordless vacuum cleaner with a lithium-ion battery is its lighter weight. If you’re planning to use the vacuum for stairs or have to move it regularly during cleaning from room to room and level to level, weight is a very important consideration.
Bagged or Bagless
Most modern cordless upright vacuum cleaners are bagless. You can thank Dyson Vacuum for that. The advantages of a bagless vacuum with a dust bin is that you can see how full the bin is, you can empty it directly into your trash without having to replace a bag, and they’re reusable so there is no additional cost for additional bags.
On the other hand, bags release less dust into the air when emptying them and most bagless models must have a separate filter that may still need to be replaced periodically. Bagged models usually hold more dirt so you can vacuum longer before you need to replace the bag. Some also believe that the best HEPA bagged models do a better job of filtering out allergens than a comparable bagless model.
A brush roll lives at the business end of your vacuum cleaner and provides the agitation necessary to dislodge dirt in carpets for a deeper clean. A brush roll is not necessary for hard floor surfaces where its motion can spread dirt around instead of directing it towards the vacuum inlet and its brushing action might scratch your floor.
A multi-surface cordless vacuum cleaner with a brush roll will have a brush roll switch that allows you to turn the brush roll off for hard floor surfaces and for vacuuming lightweight area rugs.
Some cordless upright vacuums have the ability to vacuum both carpet and hard floor surfaces. Some are also height-adjustable to handle different carpet thicknesses. If your home has a combination of carpets and hard floor surfaces with area rugs, look for a multi-surface capable cordless vacuum cleaner
HEPA filtration is designed to remove 99.97% of allergens like smoke, mold, pet dander and dust particles down to 0.3 microns. If you have a family member with allergies, a HEPA filter on a cordless, upright bagless vacuum cleaner is a must.
An important factor the effectiveness of HEPA filtering is the air pathway of the vacuum. Some vacuums have HEPA filters, but don’t seal the vacuum’s entire air pathway. That means that even though most of the air may run through the filter, an unknown amount of unfiltered air will leak from the vacuum possibly rendering the HEPA filtering ineffective. A proper HEPA-filtered vacuum will have a sealed air pathway in addition to the HEPA filter.
Vacuum Path Width
A wider vacuuming path means you can clean more floor surface faster. If regularly vacuum large areas of carpet or hard floor surfaces, a wider vacuum head can reduce your vacuuming time.
Again, you can thank a Dyson cordless vacuum for swivel steering. Swivel steering allows you to more easily maneuver around home obstacles by allowing you to keep the vacuum handle fairly stable while the vacuum head swivels and turns.
Some cordless vacuums come with additional tools and capability to handle pet hair. These features are more common on corded models.
Some models come with a built-in headlight to illuminate dark areas in corners and under furniture where it can be hard to see otherwise.
Common attachment tools that may come with your cordless vacuum cleaner include a crevice tool, dusting brush, upholstery tool, and a deeper-cleaning turbo brush.
